List of Known Holders of the Victoria Cross Commemorated in Brookwood Cemetery

Monuments to Courage by David HarveyThis list is based on my ongoing research into Brookwood Cemetery. It contains the names of 14 known holders of the Victoria Cross buried or otherwise commemorated in the cemetery. The total is one of the highest for any British cemetery.

The information is partly based on the research undertaken by the late David Harvey, whose definitive book Monuments to Courage: Victoria Cross Headstone & Memorials (1999) is highly recommended. I was fortunate to correspond with the author over several matters of detail. It is a great shame his other project, on the casualties of the Crimean War, was never completed.

Brookwood used to commemorate a fifteenth VC recipient. Samuel George Pearse (1897-1919) was commemorated on the Russia Memorial in the Brookwood Military cemetery, but this was removed by the CWGC in 2015.

Further information can be found on the Victoria Cross website.

The list will be updated and amended as necessary. If you are aware of any errors or omissions, then please feel free to contact me.
