Brookwood Cemetery in the Woking History Journal

Brookwood Cemetery in the pages of the Woking History Journal

Woking History Journal issue 1 1989The Woking History Journal was first published in 1989 by local historian Iain Wakeford. It was produced on a quarterly basis until the summer of 1991 when the lack of finance and sponsorship obliged Iain to cease publication.

In total, seven issues were produced, covering a wide variety of subjects on the history and heritage of the Woking area.

In 1988, having been invited by Iain to support his annual Woking History Festivals by assisting with the programme of guided walks and lectures, I contributed three articles on the cemetery for publication in his Woking History Journal.

These articles appeared in volume 1 (1989), volume 3 (Summer 1990) and volume 6 (Spring 1991). Further articles were planned, but with the final issue appearing in the summer of 1991, the later parts were never completed.

Here I have provided links to the relevant issues reproduced on Iain’s own website, along with brief details of the scope of each article.

These articles were subsequently used as the basis of the Brookwood Cemetery trail leaflets, which provided a series of self-guided tours through the cemetery. They also provided a framework for the original edition of An Introduction to Brookwood Cemetery in 1992. Further down the line, all these publications were put to good use for my definitive guide to the cemetery, London’s Necropolis, which appeared in 2004.
